2nd Grade Boys Lacrosse
by posted 03/06/2020

Dear 2nd Grade Parents,

We had a few boys sign up this week that missed the email that was sent on Monday. I wanted to make sure everyone saw that 2nd grade boys lacrosse will start next Saturday 3/14, not tomorrow 3/7.

Also, I wanted to point out the location of the preseason practices was wrong in my previous email. All March practices will be at Houlihan Field.

The full practice & game schedule for the season can be found here:

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to seeing you on March 14th!

Best,

Pat Murphy

Welcome to 2nd Grade Boy Lacrosse
by posted 03/02/2020

Dear 2nd Grade Parents,

Welcome to 2nd Grade Boys Lacrosse! My name is Pat Murphy and I will be running the 2nd Grade Boys Lacrosse Program this season. I am looking forward to coaching and helping to develop the boys’ game.

For those of you who may not know me, my son James is a 2nd grader at Franklin School. I played high school lacrosse at nearby Westfield rival Bridgewater-Raritan and played in college at Rutgers. I coached at Watchung Hills high school for a year after college, and have been coaching in the soft toss program the last few years, so I suspect I’ll recognize many faces.

Important Announcement: I know an email went out this weekend saying that we will be starting up this Saturday 3/7, however, due to some scheduling conflicts we will be pushing back the start of 2nd grade lacrosse a week to Saturday March 14th. (Please note, the 3/14 start date is for 2nd grade only, so if you have older boys in the lacrosse program this does not apply to them.)

Season Expectations: The goal this year is for the boys to HAVE FUN and be excited about coming to practice! They will continue to develop and learn the basic skills of the game, start to gain an understanding of the rules and different positions, and have the opportunity to play in a game setting.

If your son, or you, are new to lacrosse, don’t worry. By the end of the season you will love watching the game as much as your son loves playing. Having been around lacrosse my whole life I can tell you that lacrosse is much more exciting to watch than baseball ;)

Equipment Needed: Lacrosse Stick, helmet, gloves, shoulder pads, arm pads, cup and mouthpiece.

(If you need equipment Universal Lacrosse in town sells a nice starter package at a good price)

Practice Schedule:

I know there will be conflicts with basketball, baseball, soccer and other sports/activities as the season goes on and I completely understand. If your son has to miss lacrosse that’s okay.

Pre-season (March 14 - April 3):

Fridays - 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm at Houlihan Field

Saturdays - 8:00 am  - 9:30 am at Koehler

Spring Break - No Lacrosse

Regular Season (April 14 - May 30):

Tuesdays and Fridays - 6:00 pm - Dark (7:15/7:30) at Grass Fields next to High School

Saturdays - 8:00 am - 9:30 am at Sid Fey

Game Schedule: There are currently 6 games on the schedule that fall on various Saturdays and Sundays, and a Friday and a Tuesday, in April and May. We will try to get a few more on the calendar for late May with neighboring towns.

A link to the practice and game schedule can be found here:

Volunteers: I have reached out to several parents who had indicated they were willing to help coach during the season. If anyone else would like to help please reach out to me directly. We will have over 40 boys registered for 2nd grade lacrosse, so the more help we can have the better.

Much of what we do will be an extension of the soft toss program and the boys will spend part of the practice at various stations on the field. As a volunteer the only requirement is that you are enthusiastic and willing to direct players during drills. I will provide specific details on instructions for each drill, so lacrosse experience, while beneficial, is no-way mandatory.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.  I look forward to see you on March 14th!

Best,

Pat Murphy
